13. Something Bad (Doctor Dillamond & Elphaba)

And now we have the last of the songs shorter than three minutes in length. It's not a real surprise to me that the shortest songs were the easiest to cut out of the list, because they all share similar features when you think about it. Generally, the shorter a song is, the more likely it is the kind of song that could just be acted out in a scene, but because it's been a minute or two without singing, the script instead calls for it to be sung. And none of these short songs ever come in succession, they're just there to buy some time before a big number comes up. I like this song enough to put it above the rest of the crap (from the top twelve onward, we get to the decent or really good songs) because I liked the friendship between Dillamond and Elphaba due to their common experiences. But at the same time, this barely constitutes a song. Dillamond has a few lyrics at the start, but after that it's basically just him and Elphaba repeating "something bad happening in Oz" in a sing-song voice, interspersed with non-singing lines. It's just a bit pointless, IMHO.
