2. Defying Gravity (Elphaba, Glinda, Guards & Citizens of Odds)

This song is the face of Wicked, so for it not to rank first on this list...as Daniele Donato would say, "SHOCKER!" Really, the top two came down to the songs that have been stuck in my head (in a good way) for months. The two songs that got my hopes up for seeing the show last night, and in the end, Defying Gravity is certainly amazing, and was a great way to end the first act. It's got a very similar upbeat tone to it for a lot of the song, in keeping with most of the songs from the first act, but at the same time, it's very serious and sets the tone nicely for the second act, with Elphaba and Glinda departing ways, Elphaba going to take the hard road while Glinda cannot give up the potentially cushy life she has waiting for her. Really, the only reason this song doesn't take the top spot is that for one thing, the really catchy part takes about two minutes to reach (it's the longest song that isn't over six minutes), and for another there are several sections which aren't so much singing as conversation between Elphaba and Glinda. But once Defying Gravity hits its stride, it really does become an amazing, show-stopping number, deserving of a top two finish.
