As I recall, McCain was doing okay but not doing great with the really conservative base. So he was like "gotta get me one of them far right conservatives" and grabbed her. She spent the rest of the campaign torpedoing him by looking dumb, botching interviews, and dabbling in racism. It's fair to say that once Palin was on board McCain had no chance of winning.
You recall wrong.
It was the economy turning into a disaster and Bush, McCain, AND Obama supporting TARP that torpedoed the campaign. This happened shortly, but not immediately, after he selected Palin. She "botched" interviews that were intentionally designed and edited to discredit her, yes. Nobody cared except the people who already hated her anyway.
