TBQH the numbers are probably inflated to a degree. Even if you don't actually approve, you're more likely to lie and say you do to appear to have more socially acceptable views than the other way around.
You also have to think about the people that feel it is alright just as long as it isn't their family.
I knew parents who said they were okay with gay people, but went nuts when they found that their child was gay.
