Define f(x) piecewise.
For x < -1, f(x) = -x - 1
For x >= -1, f(x) = x + 1
Take derivatives.
For x < -1, f(x) = -1
For x > -1, f(x) = 1
Derivative is positive for x > -1
The function isn't differentiable at x = -1 so you can't really say it is increasing or decreasing there.
