That's because English teachers are trying to cut to the chase and get people to stop writing "peoples" in place of "people," where it is indeed incorrect. Your teacher didn't bother to point out the exception where it is actually used.


Then again, there are times where even English teachers get it wrong. For example, if you are sick to your stomach, the correct terminology is "I don't feel good," although everyone seems to think it's socially acceptable to correct people who say that and change it to well. If you say "I don't feel well," you are saying that your sense of touch is not working properly, as in "My hands are numb; I can't feel the keys well."
