I personally don't like joke entrants in the contest to begin with because they'll either bomb horribly in round one or they'll get some sustained outside rally.

Neither of which make for fun contests for me. If having joke characters makes a contest fun for you, then I'm sure you really enjoyed the amazing contest GameSpot just ran.

Oh no, I actually care about seeing legitimate results, I hate fun because legitimate results between legitimate characters is one of the things I enjoy most about these contests. I actually want to see if Mario/Sonic is legitimately strong enough to beat Cloud/Sephiroth.

I don't care if Barkley/Jordan gets into the contest because it's funny for the few seconds I first see it in the bracket, and after that, I don't care.

The argument is typically that a joke character as a rule of thumb should not beat a non-fodder character. Yes, Missingno and L Block broke this assumption, but if you're going to have one on one matches, this is (typically) easily controlled. If you're going to complain about Mudkip, don't complain that he made it in, complain that his opponents were Pit/Tingle/Luigi (almost any pokemon would have advanced here). If Allen didn't want it advancing, he could have put it in a match it couldn't win (hell with Link and some random midcarder would have been fine). That's why CATS is a perfectly fine joke. If he wins, it's the mods fault for putting him where he is (come on, Ansem? That's a legitimately debatable match).
