Osama bin Laden? Unless you mean death of an American citizen, in which case I'd probably say Betty Ford. Maybe even Amy Winehouse, Liz Taylor, Patrick Swayze, or Walter Cronkite.
EDIT: Well actually I guess Amy Winehouse and Liz Taylor weren't American but still.
