Into the Shadows

In a city made of concrete and cobblestone streets, citizens crowded in the square. Electrical lamps piercing through the darkness of night. A wooden platform was placed in the center where an official of the World Court stood. Speaking with a big, loud voice, he addressed problems and concerns. Most of his answers were lies, but what the people wanted to hear.

The uproar was understandable when the official suddenly fell silent. A second later his face hit the floor. His lifeless eyes stared at nothing. A straight pitch black blade dripped with blood. The man holding it had no expression. Dressed in all black, including his wavy hair, his clothes almost seemed uniform, like they were made for fighting and killing. Even with the surrounding artificial light he still almost blended in completely with the night, but his arms were exposed. His skin was pale, and contrasted only by a black and blue dragon tattoo twisting down his right arm.

After the immediate shock wore off, every individual in the crowd recognized the culprit. A very dangerous man, and one of the Sea Lords. Thirteen pirate captains. Each with incredible skill and control over an element of their own. On top of that they also had the highest bounties in the world. This one was the leader, and therefore the most wanted man in the world...

"Halo!" The crowd started to panic.

Before it got out of hand, another voice rose above the noise, one with authority. An armored guard stepped up to the platform clutching a spear. His eyes fixed on Halo, who stared right back, unperturbed. Two more guards followed up the steps with crossbows aimed and ready.

"Don't move. You're under arrest for murder and general crimes against humanity," the lead guard said in his strongest voice. It was convincing, but there was a clear hint of anxiety.

Halo smirked.

More guards arrived and surrounded him.

It was deadly silent. Tension and fear filled the air. It was made worse when the lamps suddenly stopped illuminating the area. Even the light from the moon was snuffed out. The Square was plunged into shadow.

"A shroud of darkness," one of the guards pointed out. He's seen this before. With visibility reduced, they were all quickly realizing that didn't stand a chance.

Suddenly, several of the guards cried out. Others started screaming. Chaos ensued while everyone was stumbling and trying to escape to their homes, or just as far away as possible.

The lead guard had his spear raised in defense, but he was aware that it did him little good. He couldn't see, but his enemy could. Just as that thought occurred, he felt the terrifying presence beside him.

Halo whispered in a menacing voice. "Fool." The guard was stunned. He couldn't move. He couldn't even reply. "Lucky for you, I'm not in the mood for senseless killing tonight. And I'm out of time."

The guard let out a deep breath, possibly a sigh of relief. The darkness had cleared and the light returned. Halo had vanished. People were still in disarray, but aside from the assassinated official, no one else was seriously injured. Even the guards that were taken down didn't sustain fatal wounds.

"Lucky? I guess so..."
