I changed my concept a bit. Unless I change it again, Lawrence (my character) would be a commoner hired as a teenager to essentially let knights and fighters attack him in training, and earned enough gold and skill doing it that he wants to simply go out there and do something heroic. Marshal doesn't sound like the right class for that.

They get a total of 23, plus your int bonus, if you never slow your progression down at all. And maybe I missed it, but I read the Duskblade spell section in PBHII and it didn't seem very large.
Plus your int bonus. Remember, 23 spells is a lot for base values. Add two to three spells a level and you've got your effective end values.
EDIT: Also, two things: the Duskblade list has a ton of utility, and it can be expanded.
