That's not too bad if you don't always have to do it, it's still a time and ink eater, on top of the fact that you can't play in official tournaments. There's also at least one program for the computer that seems like its pretty good that allows you to play online and it's free (I know some general ino on it but haven't tried it yet), but you run into the tournament problem because there are official ones online on the official website.

It really isn't as bad as you might expect if you do it deck by deck, finding and printing out only what you want/need. Printing out a deck of 60 cards takes 7 sheets of paper and if you print out at fast-low quality setting you can do roughly ...oh i say... 100 sheets of magic cards on a single black/color cartridge. Your looking at 4-5 bucks spent per deck for ink/supplies.

It takes about 30 minutes overall to find, print, cut, and pack a single deck in protectors with some construction (or preferably that really thin cardboard) paper for feel-like durability of a card. To save even more time I would use stick glue (not as messy) and combine the printed sheet onto the construction paper before cutting out the cards.

But your right this is only good for casual play with family/friends. But it sure the heck beats spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for that single deck. :p
