If you think this is so out of place, you're basically cherrypicking the entire series in the first place and ignoring all the stuff that was already screwy.
Like even with this same character, MGS4 Raiden breakdance fought enemies using gekkos that tethered his legs as flails and stopped the Outer Haven Arsenal Gear with one hand and SURVIVED IT. Despite everything in the scene acting as if he should have died from it.
And Peacewalker had Big Boss standing against the US, the Patriots, absolutely everyone on a global sense leading a huge military group in which he was outstandingly well known before MG1. And in possession of a nuclear-equipped railgun-mounted metal gear. And capable of benchpressing and throwing every hundred+ ton mech he fights (despite it being the cold war period) during quick time events in the boss battles.
