Movie's not that great.
I stayed away from the series because I thought the movie was terrible.
This was over ten years ago (when I was in middle school) when my friend lent me Ghost in the Shell and Akira and told me they were godly and I hated them both.
I rewatched Akira last year and I still hated it.
