Of course gameplay is the number one thing that matters, but it's incredibly foolish and narrow-minded to think that nothing else matters. Especially story.
Really depends on the game
I don't give a rat's ass about story in Mega Man X, Super Mario Galaxy, or even Fallout 3, an RPG. Story doesn't matter one bit in any of those games - they're great, but their stories are nonexistant or bad, they do nothing to make the game any better.
