I've seen some while camping. Black Bears and Brown Bears up in King's Canyon. they usually keep their distance, and you gotta put your food away at night or else they'll come in.
One time they came into camp and everyone went ape**** banging crap around and making noise. It just kind of made a beeline for it. Of course you don't want to approach it, but if usually its enough to just make a load of noise. At least for black bears. Other types, who knows
Yeh, black bears are pretty easy to scare off. I come across them hiking every once in a while.
