He was talking about the single player story mode. You can only use your Mii, because it's supposed to be like your character interacting with the others.
Online multiplayer is dumb though, yeah.
That said, you can select characters in local-multi
And this is a game where the character is literally just an avatar, anyway, so it's not worth getting upset over.
