I don't really get the thrill of being a fan for a college team you have no ties to. It's fine to root for a team or even like one, but in this example someone yelling ROLL TIDE and they didn't go there.... what.
I think this is more regional reason if anything. States like Alabama, and Nebraska are both huge college football states, because they don't have anything else to go to. They have no professional teams, and because those schools are traditional powerhouses it obviously garners a lot of attention, because it acts as the professional sport in that state.
This only holds true for a few select states and schools however.
