Cartoon characters aren't female unless they have long hair, lipstick, and long eyelashes. (Or *****-librarian glasses instead of long eyelashes). Alternatively, if the character is pink or wears a dress or has impossibly large boobs.
Also, with anything created in the 80s or early 90s, characters are automatically male unless they are the token girl. (And sometimes the token girl still gets declared male. See: Poison).
