See, for me, FFXIII went like this:
The visuals were great.
The battle system was great.
The characters were largely enjoyable.
The storyline was awful.
I agree, but I'm a person who doesn't need a great story, and I don't find it to be important. Probably why I put it in my top 3 FF games. I loved the battle system, linearity didn't bother me, I just found it to be a very enjoyable game throughout.
