Ok. I have a question or two.
1. What is the relationship (if any) between caliber and millimeter? (i.e. .45 cal and 10mm) I never really understood the difference.
2. Where are you? Are these classes and the permit class required where you live?
1. I didn't know the answer so I looked it up. This forum post seems to explain it as just using the metric system vs the english system. 9mm and 10mm are easier to say than their english caliber counterparts, whereas .45 or .50 cal is easier to say than their metric counterparts.

2. I'm in Memphis, TN. I'll be taking intro to handguns w/ the gf next week and then following up w/ the intermediate class before finally taking the permit class next month.
The classes are in no way required to purchase a handgun, or to even have it in the home. They're simply to educate myself on using my gun. However, Tn law states that in order to actually carry a loaded handgun, you need the permit. If you don't have the permit and you use the gun outside of your home (even in self defense) it's unlawful.
Obviously that doesn't transfer to the range, but that brings up the question of transportation. If you don't have your permit, then you must have the gun completely unloaded and have the ammo stored out of range of the gun (so you'd put the gun in your trunk and the ammo in the front seat or something like that).
You do have to take the permit class in order to actually get the permit, but you actually get the permit from the DMV after taking the class, which I thought was hilarious....send someone to one of the most reviled places you possibly can in order to get a permit to carry a gun.... lol
