Mmm... it's hard for me to say personally. I usually choose to not compare the two, but I probably spend more time reading than playing video games, and I definitely cover more books in a given year.

I've read a few, and the games are better for each one. The Myst books do come close, though, but Riven was just too good.

Actually, in one instance I've played games based on books that were absolutely better than the books. It's two text adventure games from Legend Entertainment, Gateway and Gateway II: Homeworld, which are based on Frederik Pohl's Gateway series. Of course, they're text adventures so it probably isn't that extraordinary of a feat. They didn't follow the events of the books, but were really just set within the same universe.
