I read the entire article myself when I first saw this topic. I didn't bother to mention or even think about the "justification" that was given past that first read because it immediately tripped my "obvious bull****" flag.
yet "the only logical reason is that he was afraid a marine would shoot him" didn't cause you any issues worth commenting upon.
"Only" is too strong, but it is clearly the most logical reason.
