Um technically this was the case in the cartoon as well iirc. They weren't "trapped" so much as repressed but uh yeah-- I remember some earthbenders in some sorta concentration camp in an earthy valley sometime in season 1.
Anyway yeah the movie is pretty bad even forgetting they pretty much got every reference wrong (amazingly-- you'd think they accidentally get more pronunciations right for instance), but it's not the worst thing ever-- it's still better than the Village!
