Like, I wasn't necessarily excited to see Aang kill (or otherwise viciously incapacitate) Ozai, but I wanted to see how his character dealt with coming to grips with the necessity of the actions required of him as Avatar.
Exactly. I wanted to see what Aang did when his back was against the wall and he was out of options.
It's like if in say the Trigun anime Vash was able to just take away Legato's mind controlling powers and save the day that way. The whole point is that it's great to try and not kill when you have other options, but when you have no other way you have to make a choice. At the last second Aang didn't get to make a choice, he got a Get Out of Jail free plot device.
