I will say that I personally like The Motion Picture. I didn't for a long time but I eventually came around to it. The recent HD Director's Edition in particular I think is good.

I can't recommend it to the TC though. It's very different from the J.J. Abrams Trek movies, or even from the other TOS movies. It's a slow, contemplative movie. It came out post Star Wars but has more in common with older science fiction films like 2001. If that sounds appealing to you then you could give it a try but otherwise you should probably avoid it.

The MP bored me to tears, but I think this is an absolutely fair assessment of it.

Also: in Shatners book about making the movies, his stories from filming the first one are great.
