Khan was just the studio pandering to the Star Wars masses, and yes, their considerable wallets.

While Gene Roddenberry deserves his dues for creating Star Trek, one shouldn't get too reverent of him because he had plenty of bad ideas that needed reining in. I mean, he might also have considered you to not be a Trekkie if you disliked Wesley Crusher (this would be the vast majority of the fandom) because that character was his idea and a way for him to indulge his fantasies by putting a prodigy version of his younger self in the story.

It was the right decision to 86 Roddenberry and go in a different direction for Star Trek 2, because the movies have to appeal to a wider audience than just Trekkies to be successful. The franchise would not have survived another film like TMP.
