I think there was some sort of discussion that made it reasonable for him to say he wasn't a simpson at the time. The discussion was "did you mean you weren't in the TV show simpsons or did you mean you weren't a member of the Simpsons family" to which he clarified that his character IS from the show, but is not a Simpson. But that's still a detail that he decided to provide completely unprompted.
