My question is, what was it about Santos that flipped the district red, when it had been blue for a decade(though it was red for 20 years prior if my googling is accurate). I mean, the second he took office it was lie and red flag after another, but HOW did we get to the point in a race where Democrats overachieved in a midterm this district goes red? And I know somebody who isn't TC is going to say "well, Trump voters are dumb as shit" because he is also a liar and a fraudster with red flags a mile long, but that doesn't answer the question I have.

Republicans ran a scare campaign in NY and Hochul is an atrocious incumbent with inseparable ties to the disgraced former Governor Cuomo. No enthusiasm from Ds, huge spending push from Rs since they thought maybe Zeldin could take it, general lack of effort and high complacency from Dems since NY is solidly blue, etc.

I think this mostly translated into Zeldin causing a downballot stream of good results for Rs. Even Schumer had the closest race in his Senate career (it still wasn't close, but a far cry from the absurd margins he started to obtain in prior races. At one point he won like 90% of NY's counties.)

Statewide candidate strength can pull people over. In a turn of the bizarre schisms seen in 2022, Tim Ryan (despite losing) pulled a couple of Dems over the line in Ohio as part of their overall overperformance (or flat out landsliding) in much of the Midwest.
