Typically the VP is someone who appeals to a President's base. Kamala on paper checks a lot boxes: minority, woman, non traditional name. These are supposed to appeal to progressives, which Biden sorely needed after Hilary. The problem is she(due to her crime record) is an even worse candidate and is seen by many as a true blue conservative. Fortunately, Trump earned enough bad will that Kamala didn't matter. She is largely a non issue as she's basically been invisible since the election.
