I work in retail as the general manager of a liquor store.

I like my job. I get paid decently(and know how to move up to make more should I want to) and the hours are pretty good. But, the main reason I don't mind is because I run a state owned liquor store in a state that is still control. So, I don't have to ask people to sign up for credit cards and memberships, phone numbers, e-mails. I have no real quotas or goals to meet, corporate won't fold and give customers what they want(if I follow policy, I followed policy too bad). It's retail but a better version of it only because it isn't so corporatized and stupid.

I've poached two employees from the Dollar Tree in the plaza because they weren't being treated well over there and at my store they work less and get paid more, and the work is more fulfilling because it isn't the same as general corporate retail.

All this being said, I sympathize with people at their ropes end when they work a retail job making $9 an hour, have to deal with stupid and toxic management(because the company sucks, nobody can be happy at work. managers just can make it somebody elses problem), idiotic asshole customers. I can't blame anybody for snapping or being rude if rudeness is given. I practice good customer service habits in my store, but the foundation is there. I like my job, I like my coworkers, "corporate" isn't so bad, and customers aren't so bad. I can actually enjoy myself and my job as a result, and good customer service follows.
