Rabid anti-AI folks include people who are worried about AI killing off humans, so there's like a much better cause there.

I don't know that many people are actually worried about AI going full Skynet.

The bigger issues that are already in play are:

Companies using AI to replace human workers and hoard profit in places without adequate social safety nets

Corrupt governments (most of them) using them for facial recognition/human tracking

Automotive companies putting dangerous self-driving cars on the road

AI used for more "mundane" tasks (like hiring/firing employees) trained to be biased/bigoted

Privacy violations like deepfakes and identify theft

Social engineering through social media algorithms

AI in and of itself is just a tool that isn't good or bad but most of the entities using it are bad and will use it to do bad things.
