I don't know that many people are actually worried about AI going full Skynet.

The bigger issues that are already in play are:

Companies using AI to replace human workers and hoard profit in places without adequate social safety nets

Corrupt governments (most of them) using them for facial recognition/human tracking

Automotive companies putting dangerous self-driving cars on the road

AI used for more "mundane" tasks (like hiring/firing employees) trained to be biased/bigoted

Privacy violations like deepfakes and identify theft

Social engineering through social media algorithms

AI in and of itself is just a tool that isn't good or bad but most of the entities using it are bad and will use it to do bad things.
There's definitely plenty of folks worried about x-risks caused by AI. Like sure, those other things are probably what most people are concerned about, but most people also haven't paid any attention to this stuff until like 1.5 years ago. While the x-risk people have been looking into this stuff for over a decade at least.
