What are the issues with the democratic party primaries? Seems to me like democracy working as expected.

The thing she pretended not to understand was that political parties are essentially private entities. Just like your neighborhood hair salon or hardware store has laws and regulations regarding who they can hire, serve,... so do political parties. However, they are still private businesses and still get to decide the hiring process and ultimately the individual hire. Whatever business you work for could make it official tomorrow that all new hires or promotions will be done through direct democracy, one associate one vote.... there's nothing preventing that. (again so long as they observe all the other standard laws that we as a society have in place)

I can start a new political party right now, and then decide we pick candidates by my whim, drawing names from a hat, or through a rigorous voting process... it's not an election to office.

This is completely different from the general election, which is tightly regulated and the voting and election process is clearly and legally mapped out.
