I'd argue what you are saying easily goes back to KanWans post as well.

Death in a lot of circles is mysterious, still is. Moreso in the past when humans couldn't explain causes of death which only added fuel to the fire in some circles. Some supernatural force was pissed off, or wasnt happy which caused your death andor illness. Customs that had nothing to do with science to save humans or promote a prosperous life.

Then the question of where you go after death is a concept the humans to this day still want to find answers to.

Hence so many supernatural places, beings and explanations attested to life after death like spirits, heaven, hell, underworlds, spirit realms, Valhalla, reapers, shikigami, etc, etc.

Even to this day, so many humans assert supernatural explanations to explain away phenomenon they can't explain. Or supernatural explanations to provide comfort explanations to things they hope is real like helping a loved one find peace or dreaming about a loved one, or thinking they saw some supernatural force involving death, or safe travel through a ritual of some sort that varies from culture to culture.
