So Japan basically leads the world in not being religious in the practical sense (42% don't believe in God versus 20% who do). And what you see when asked if an afterlife exists is 44% say it doesn't versus only 18% who say it does. This means even among those who believe in a God, some don't believe in an afterlife. Partly this could be attributed to the types of Buddhism that are popular here which are effectively atheist or at least place emphasis on your current life rather than anything that happens after you die.

I think you will see more and more counties move towards these types of beliefs as religion gets less popular. And my anecdotal experience just living in Japan is that talking about believing in an afterlife gets you viewed as no different than if someone told you they believed in ghosts, demons, bigfoot, or whatever other supernatural thing.
