If you count my accounts, my wifes, and the HSA account, theyre at about $570k as of today.

Ive been putting into 401k for 20+ years and have only recently been maxing out annual contributions, so it has had a long time to grow.

This is how the growth has looked:

*Ken Jeong squinting at paper gif*, I know, but it basically shows:
  • Ive contributed $165k to the plan all-time
  • Employer match = $101k
  • Market growth = $259k

I do the chart to help me see that things in the long term usually do always recover, even when the market has real rough spots. Basically, the market would have to tank nearly 70% now for me to lose any of the $165k of my own money thats been put in.

The employer contributions also help immensely with this.
