This is all true but there are definitely people who just enjoy violence for its own sake. Ive met quite a few people who simply enjoy asserting themselves over others or making other people suffer.

Just to be clear, Im not claiming that this is what everybody with a criminal record is. Most criminals are people who made bad choices, often influenced at least in part by things beyond their control. Im just taking issue with the idea that violent shit bags are exceedingly rare.

I do admit the system turned out to be a lot more reasonable and nuanced than I thought it would be. Literally every single person I've met across multiple offender counseling groups has been very insightful about their problems, how they led to their offending and how to address their problems and move on with their lives. I've learned a lot about things like how your attachment style forms, CBT therapy and the like.

And it wasn't that violent "shitbags" are exceedingly rare, it's that the psychologists I've spoken to have very rarely encountered someone who is a "lost cause" so to speak.
