In, um, "fairness" to them. A nuclear war will not cause the world to look like a Fallout game like all the people who constantly are terrified of nuclear stuff existing always think. So by that metric they are in fact not that bad.

Doesn't change the fact that a nuclear war WOULD collapse current civilization, mostly due to the massive logistics hit everywhere. And to be fair, this would actually leave the planet in a better state then allowing civilization to continue further destroying the planet for another 10-20 years before it collapses from climate catastrophies. The Chernobyl area and red forest and such are proof that wildlife is hurt much more by there being humans in an area than by radiation (the area is actually something of a wildlife haven).

Obviously, the republicans are not thinking of this sort of thing when they say "nukes aren't so bad" though. They just want to ease the idea of being able to use, or at least threaten to use them, because they want to become Russia.
