Ya know it could have worked if it was introduced early and developed. Not just randomly near the end of the series "Oh yeah these two are descended from major, ancient ninja clans that no one has ever mentioned" I suspect that the writers don't necessarily want to do this but studios/publishers pressure them to keep upping the stakes. Bleach did the same thing. It wasn't enough that Ichigo had a big spirit power.
