Guardians of the Galaxy succeeded because the writing was funny, the use of talented actors, and the tone was unique. It definitely wasn't because comic books nerds loved the original source material.

As a comic book nerd and fan of the GotG before the movie was a thing, you're hitting the nail on the head. The only accurate characters are Rocket and Groot, everyone else had "major" things changed ranging from personality, intelligence, appearance, origins, motives,... Starlord being the most egregious.
But the movies get a pass because they're actually good and enjoyable movies even for those that love the source material.
