Because U.S. society has this really unfortunate tendency of adopting and legitimizing right-wing narratives.

We see this also with "cancel culture" and "woke". That was shit right-wingers bitched about, the media never challenged them on it and help legitimize their narratives, then it spreads to the greater population.

Same reason so many people think "fiscally responsible" and "good for the economy" when they think of the Republican party, even though it's literally the opposite of fiscally responsible or good for the economy.
