It was september 7th 97' actually (you are thinking of the pal release). Still though, yeah internet acess still wasn't at that point where it was super common until the early 2000s when more and more families started getting their own desktop PCs. At least in north america anyway.

Best we had pre-having our own PC was going to a library and maybe the like, 3 or 4 PCs that was there had dial-up internet on them. My middle and highschool PCs definitely had no internet access whatsoever when I was in middle and highschool from 96' to 2001....those PC classes was basically just for general info like how to type, where to find programs, and playing the copy of duke nukem 3D some junior or senior sneakily installed on the PC before they graduated, lol.
Oops. I glanced at the wiki info from the google search page, where it lists all of the release dates at once. I must have read the Pal date thinking it was the NA date.

There was no social media and smartphones, but internet was still fairly common. There's a reason those jokes about AOL discs being so common is a thing. I had it, my family members had it, most of my friends did. I'm more surprised at the comments in here saying they didn't have internet.
Sure, plenty of people had internet. But it's not like spoilers were some inescapable thing, like that guy was making it sound. We had dial-up internet in the 90's, but I used it almost exclusively to look up cheats for Genesis/SNES games and then later print Gamefaqs guides for PS1 games.

Outside of that, I wasn't really able to use the internet a lot, because that meant I was tying up the phone line (we only had 1 phone line, so you had to disconnect the phone to log in to AOL).
