No, they have a point. Electronic voting is a bit less secure, but the real issue is it breaks trust in elections. You basically have a black box that spits out a winner and you just have to trust that it's counted properly. To steal an analogy from Tom Scott: If instead of a machine, you had to tell your vote to some guy at the polling booth and he promises he'll record it correctly. How confident would you be that everything was on the up and up? You could give some sort of receipt or record of the vote, at which point you now have an insanely expensive pencil.

On topic: No. You cannot have current events without politics. The big current event is Iran's attack on Israel, which is absolutely impossible to discuss without also discussing the politics of the region that sparked said attack.
