I think Amazon was caught off guard regarding how successful this show was going to be. The marketing was kind of non-existent and Amazon released the show 2 days earlier than their initial release date because of the good word of mouth it was getting from critics. When the show started exploding, all of a sudden people started seeing it on their social media sites like youtube and twitter (x). I honestly think Amazon accidently hit a gold mine of a show, probably why they renewed season 2 so quick as well.

I blame the massive success of Stranger Things season 1 as the reason Netflix started becoming so cutthroat regarding their shows. The only other show that was able to overthrow Stranger Things in terms of viewership was Squid Games, but Stranger Things was the one show that boosted Netflix subscription like crazy.
