I'm not naive enough to say that you can have those kinds of conversations with everyone or that there aren't bad faith actors out there who will are gunning for the 'gotcha' statement, but if you drive these people away, there are others who are more than willing to welcome them with open arms and harden their beliefs even further. Ive tried having non-hostile abortion debates with conservatives.
