If this was really about security, then there would be action taken against social media companies that allow the type of stochastic terrorism of shit stains like Chaya Raichik, that has actually gotten Americans killed. That's way more important than some nebulous threat of what China may or may not do with people's data.

You're conflating two different issues as an explanation for why one doesn't make sense.
