It is also seen as a sign of laziness to be the first person to leave the office at the end of the day; so the workplace devolves into this stupid waiting game until the boss leaves amd everybody follows. At which point it is generally expected for you to get dinner with or go out drinking with your coworkers/boss.

You'll notice a severe lack of fathers in Japanese media, anime, etc. This is not due to Disney Parent syndrome where they died offscreen. This is because that's about how often many Japanese kids actually see their father, who leaves for work at 5AM and comes home after 11 6 days a week.

I live in the US and had a boss at one time who said he would never leave work before the district manager did.

that's cool, but..sometimes the DM doesn't come in until 2pm and just sits there on his laptop until 5pm because he can work from a computer.

but if I'm coming in at 6am I'm going home at 3, the manager can sit there by himself if he wants to
