Yes, that's a turbocharger. Formerly just for sports cars, they are now turning up everywhere. Allows small engines to make competitive power, but require higher (expensive) grades of gas and introduce a new failure point. I used to have a turbocharged Subaru that would push you back in your seat when it kicked in, but my current car is not especially fast, yet it has two turbos on a struggling 1.5L engine.
