Doesn't seem unusual. Prison time is on the books for such a crime. What would be the basis of the appeal? I mean, I'm sure he won't get any time for this, but what would be the reason an appellate court would overturn a sentencing that is within the guidelines?

Within the boundaries of the maximum allowable punishment isn't the same thing as within guidelines. There's generally a history for these crimes indicating what kind of sentences people usually get for a first time conviction and jail time is a pretty extreme sentence. Even if found guilty on all counts, the maximum possible jail time is 4 years.

It's a lot harder to weasel your way out of violating probation though.
