I saw this on a deposition the other day, and I asked one of the partners what does this mean and he told me its a softer way of saying dead, or killed. And I asked him I was like, who would those words possibly offend, certainly not the dead guy. I dont think he cares.
It's typically used in reference to suicide, which is something that leaves a lot of trauma behind. So while obviously the dead person isn't going to be affected by word choices, people who are traumatized by a loved one's suicide most certainly could be.
